In today’s busy and often chaotic world, sometimes what we need most is perspective. Window is all about point of view: observing others, observing yourself, seeing things from a different vantage point, and sometimes seeing things in ways that only you can. It’s about isolation and connection, about what we see and what we don’t, and how the world goes by around us regardless of what parts of it we choose to engage or ignore… and how sometimes the view can surprise us.

ABOUT THE STORY

Windows are portals… looking out, and looking in. From inside, you can see the world out there, the people in it, the way they move about. Sometimes you see people that catch your attention, people you wish you knew better, people you haven’t seen before. In this case the window is almost a barrier, like the glass that prevents the cat from actually going out to chase after that bird in the yard. Other times, you see the faces of strangers, the wildness of weather, the cars and the chaos and the noise of the world around. At times like this, your window is your safe vantage point, a way to see the world and know it without having to subject yourself to its whims.

Less obvious windows exist, too… the strangeness of dreams that lets us peer into the bizarre nature of our own minds, or the modern screens that allow us to reach out digitally and connect with other human beings who might be right next door, or halfway around the world. Even mirrors give us an outside perspective on how people might see us, or how we can choose to see ourselves.

In that way, we almost start to wonder if we as human beings aren’t windows for one another. Somebody else’s perspective will usually offer a different aspect of the same view, and we all have a different focal point to what we’re seeing. The eyes are often called out as the ‘windows’ to the soul, though, so if somebody is looking at you as you look back, you both might see a lot more than you expected to. This is the essence of connection… when perspectives collide, and allow people to see more together than they could on their own.
