We’re all nerds here, and as such, one of the things we enjoy, that Miriam has always held an active interest in, is historical reenactment, specifically in the medieval and renaissance periods. So for this project, I wanted to try and bridge that gap between “neon lights” and “knights in shining armor”. I have always loved music from that era, or what we know about it. (Fun fact: I actually play the recorder! And not just because I was taught in elementary school… I took several years of lessons, and can play the C recorder with some skill, including both Soprano and Tenor.) So I wanted to start the project with more of a “bardcore” feel. Liam’s voice is still singing, as RC wrote the lyrics for the song, but I helped choose some of the initial instrumentation, like the hurdy-gurdy, hammered dulcimer, and the flute/recorder sound that plays that repeated lilting phrase.

Once we had the “bardcore” version mixed, it was time for me to bring that VISIØN sound back into it and create something that sounded less like a film score and more like synthwave. Also, because of the way vocals tend to fall on Miriam’s ears due to some hearing loss, I wanted to specifically create an instrumental version of the piece as well. I ended up with a few really nice mixes, one of which actually had the melody line in the intro! I was thrilled, as this would allow me to layer it in Cakewalk so that part of the instrumental would carry that same melody in the chorus. The instrumental was based on the synthwave version, but it still carries a lot of that medieval feel to it, which I just love.
