My third Single has finally been released, after much struggle! The instrumental tracks for Chase happened pretty easily… I more or less knew what mashups I wanted to make this time. The struggle came with the main track. I had planned to rework another Voidfinder song for this one, but one of the songs I had played with is actually an upcoming Voidfinder release, so using an alternate version didn’t make sense here, and the other song I tried just wasn’t working out… I wasn’t feeling it like I usually do with my Singles.
RC, ever my source of sanity, had already scheduled a prerelease of some of the music from our upcoming album, Window. Since this is going to be the first VISIØN album release that includes a song that originated as my idea, my lyrics, my design, and sung in my project Voice, they suggested I use that track as the title song for the single, effectively doing a prerelease of my own. It seemed a bit odd to me to have a Window song on the Chase single, but the more I thought about it, it made sense.
It’s actually a track I’m passionate about… in fact a few lines from the chorus have literally been lyrics I have worked and reworked for about 26 years now. The feel of the song is pretty universal, the idea of caring deeply about somebody who can’t see in themselves the incredible things that you see in them. It’s sort of ironic, then, I suppose, that it was RC in the end who thought the song deserved to be a Single in its own right. So that’s how “Imperfect Vision” ended up being paired with instrumental mashups from Chase.
The mashups themselves were incredibly satisfying this go-around. Pairing “Butterfly” with “Electrify” was a simple choice, as they both had that driving club beat behind them, but the changes in the music were just different enough to keep things interesting. I aimed to capture the most dynamic sections of each song in the mix, and I ended up with pretty much exactly the sound I wanted! The result clearly has elements of both songs, but is almost seamless in the way it blends.
My favorite tracks, though were “Into The Infinite” and “Go! Go! Go!” so they, of course, needed their own mashup. “Infinite” always had a very open, bright, clear sort of sound that I loved, like early morning sunlight gleaming off shining metal. I worked through the mix a few times, and the sound that ended up developing took that brightness a step further, and actually pushed the structure into a Lydian feel! I loved hearing the way the chords played back and forth around the tonic, between the brassy major flat VII and the shimmer of a major II. It gives the piece such flair, and when it drops into the minor key for “Go”, you can feel it. So yeah, I had a lot of fun with these.
Anyway, enough of me geeking out over chord structures! “Imperfect Vision” is out, and I hope it resonates.
